ABSTRACT

Aims: Trauma is particularly prevalent amongst Early Intervention (EI) patients and is associated with adverse clinical and prognostic outcomes. To determine the feasibility of a large-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) of an 'EMDR for psychosis' intervention for trauma survivors with active psychotic symptoms supported by EI services, we conducted a single-blind RCT comparing 16 sessions of EMDRp + TAU versus TAU only. Method(s): EMDRp therapy and trial assessments were completed both in-person and remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, and key feasibility outcomes (recruitment & retention, therapy attendance/ engagement, adherence to EMPRp treatment protocol, and the 'promise of efficacy' of EMDRp on relevant clinical outcomes) were examined at 6- and 12-month post-randomization assessments. Results and Conclusion(s): 60 participants (100% of the recruitment target) received TAU or EMDR + TAU. The feasibility criteria examined in this trial were fully met, and EMDRp was associated with promising signals of efficacy on a range of valuable post-treatment outcomes, including improved psychotic symptoms (PANSS), subjective recovery (QPR), post-traumatic symptoms (PCL-5;ITQ), depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7) and general health status (EQ-5D-VAS) at the 6-month assessment. Signals of efficacy at 12-month were less pronounced, but remained robust for trauma symptoms and general health status. The findings will be discussed with relevance to future clinical trials of trauma-focused therapy in clients with early psychosis, and the provision of more tailored trauma therapies for EI service users.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate how prevalent asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 virus infection (COVID-19) is among patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery at two tertiary referral hospitals. Material(s) and Method(s): This retrospective study included patients without COVID-19 symptoms who underwent preoperative screening using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) before ophthalmic surgery at the Kocaeli University and Gaziantep University departments of ophthalmology [between September 1, 2020, and December 15, 2020 (group 1);between March 1, 2021, and May 30, 2021 (group 2)]. Patients scheduled for surgery and followed up in the retina, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, cataract and refractive surgery, and cornea departments were examined. Result(s): RT-PCR was positive for SARS-CoV-2 in 12 (1.4%) of 840 patients in group 1 and 7 (1.1%) out of 600 patients in group 2. None of the patients were symptomatic of COVID-19. The majority of the patients were scheduled for retina or cataract and refractive surgery in both groups (group 1;retina: 29.2%, cataract and refractive: 57.0%, group-2;retina: 31.3%, cataract and refractive: 54.5%). SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR testing was positive for seven patients in group 1 (7/245, 2.9%) and five patients in group 2 (5/188, 2.6%) who were scheduled for retinal surgery. Conclusion(s): The necessity, availability, and practicality of COVID-19 RT-PCR testing prior to ophthalmic surgeries varies depending on the protocols of each institution. COVID-19 RT-PCR testing is suggested especially before vitreoretinal surgeries and general anesthesia procedures, because of the difficulty in managing postoperative complications.Copyright © 2023 Gazi Eye Foundation. ABSTRACT

Background: Since patients admitted to the intensive care unit have a compromised im-mune system and are more prone to infection than other patients, timely diagnosis and treatment of corneal ulcers among this group of patients can prevent vision loss. Therefore, it is necessary to treat eye infections and corneal ulcers promptly and economize prohibitive costs. Objective(s): Appropriate treatment with the most effective antibiotic before the answer is available to prevent corneal ulcer complications and blindness. Method(s): This study was conducted from November 2019 to November 2020 and after approval by the ethics committee of Hamedan University of Medical Sciences with the code of ethics: IR.UMSHA.REC.1398.716. First, the corneal secretions of 121 patients admitted to the intensive care unit of Sina Hospital are prepared by an ophthalmologist (after anesthetizing the cornea with tetra-caine drops and sterile swabs) and culture in four growth mediums (blood agar, chocolate agar, thio-glycolate, and EMB). Microbial cultures are examined after 48 hours and a fungal culture is examined one week later. Disc diffusions are placed in positive microbial cultures. Antibiotic susceptibility or resistance of the antibiogram was recorded. Other demographic data, including patients' age and sex, are extracted from ICU files. Also, test results and patient identifications are recorded in a checklist designed for this purpose. Result(s): Of all the antibiotics used against common bacteria, vancomycin (84%), colistin (80.43%), cefazolin (80%), and levofloxacin (60%) had the highest sensitivity and gentamicin (93.75%), ceftazidime (86.42%) Erythromycin (85%) had the highest resistance against isolated bacteria. Conclusion(s): The data obtained from this study showed that the most common microorganisms in the age group under the age of 30 years were Acinetobacter Baumannii, in the group of 30-60 years old was Klebsiella pneumonia, and age group over 61 years old was Staphylococcus aureus, and the most sensitive antibiotics in the age group under 30 years were vancomycin and levofloxacin and the age group30-60 were colistin and vancomycin and in the age group over 61 years were vancomycin and cefazolin.Copyright © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic mediated by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-CoV2 (SARS-CoV2), made the use of face masks mandatory to check the spread of the disease. With the increased use of face masks, more people started presenting to the ophthalmologist with symptoms of dry eye. The proposed mechanism of dry eye was attributed to air blowing upwards from behind the mask into the eyes, especially in loose fitting masks. This air leads to rapid evaporation of tears and disturbance of homeostasis of the tear film.Aim: To measure self reported symptoms of dry eye and to establish mask use as a risk factor for the development of Dry Eye Disease (DED) in healthcare workers in a Tertiary Care Hospital.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted at Nilratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital for a duration of three months from December 2021 to February 2022. The study was conducted on 146 participants. An online survey was conducted using Google Forms, sent via email to hospital employees working in different departments of the hospital. All healthcare workers employed at NRS Medical College and Hospital who wore a face mask during duty hours and were willing to participate in the study were included. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was used and modified by adding "while wearing a facemask" to the end of each question. To establish face mask use as a causative agent for development of DED, a few other questions related to face mask usage were included in the survey. The data was tabulated in Microsoft Excel and analysed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. Results: The mean age of the study population was 27.4+/-8.28 years. The mean hours of wearing a mask was 6.38+/-3.04 hours. N95 face mask was the most common type of mask used. The study population included 100 doctors, 14 nursing staff, 18 optometrists, eight group D staff (sweepers and ward attendants), and six dieticians. The mean OSDI score was 14.24. Increased usage of face masks, in particular surgical, more hours of reading significantly correlated with higher incidence of DED. Conclusion: This study showed that increased hours of face mask use in particular surgical was associated with development of DED. To encourage more people to wear face masks, all possible problems arising from face mask use should be promptly identified and dealt with.

ABSTRACT

Growing data are confirming the association between the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and eye disorders, including ocular alterations and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations. The main pathophysiological mechanisms considered included a direct infection through the ocular surface, a post-viremia secretion of the virus from the lacrimal glands, and a viral dissemination through the bloodstream. According to the different ways of contagion, different structures could be involved.The most common ocular symptoms reported in COVID-19 patients were dry eye, redness, tearing, itching and pain. Among symptomatic patients, most of them presented conjunctivitis. Considering the posterior chamber, retinal artery and vein occlusions were described in few clinical reports;moreover, some studies presented cases of paracentral acute middle maculopathy occurring in COVID-19 patients. The involvement of the choroid seems to be rare, and a single case of atypical choroiditis was currently described. Between neuro-ophthalmic manifestations, optic neuritis appear to be relatively frequent and generally not associated with magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities. Some reports showed the involvement of the ocular motor nerves, often presenting with palsy. Miller Fisher syndrome has been showed in rare cases;however, this association could be corroborated by the several reports describing Guillain-Barré syndrome occurrence in COVID-19 patients.In line with well-known previous viral infection, COVID-19 seems to be associated with eye involvement. Thus, ocular and neuro-ophthalmic symptoms and signs should be carefully assessed and monitored in these patients. To reach this purpose, it is critical to implement remote diagnostic techniques. Moreover, the comprehension of the pathogenetic mechanisms is still scarce and no standardized diagnostic protocol was established for these patients, making necessary further studies to improve current understandings. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 since its appearance caused serious problems to the health sector due to the increase in infected and deceased people by directly affecting their respiratory system, making it a primordial disease that led all countries to fight this virus, generating that other diseases go to the background such as diabetes mellitus, which is a disease caused by the neglect of people's lifestyles, that has been increasing over time and that has no cure but can be prevented by controlling your blood glucose level, this disease causes diabetic retinopathy in people that with the advance of it can cause loss of sight. In addition, to detect its stage the ophthalmologist relies on his experience, occupying a lot of time and being prone to make mistakes about the patient. In view of this problem, in this article a digital image processing system was performed for the detection of diabetic retinopathy and classified according to the characteristics obtained from the features by analyzing the fundus of the eye automatically and determining the stage in which the patient is. Through the development of this system, it was determined that it works in the best way, visualizing an efficiency of 95.78% in the detection of exudates, and an efficiency of 97.14% in the detection of hemorrhages and blood vessels, resulting in a reliable and safe system to detect diabetic retinopathy early in diabetic patients. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Dry eye syndrome (DES) has become a public health concern, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical students are at risk due to an increase in visual display terminal (VDT) exposure given the transition to full-time online lectures. The presence of reduced blink rate and tear film instability in VDT users causes an increase in tear evaporation leading to symptoms of DES. This study helps us to learn about the associated factors of VDT use and DES among the young generation. This study aims to determine the prevalence and associated factors of DES among medical students exposed to VDT at the health campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 140 undergraduate medical students aged 22 to 29 years old who were VDT users. Factors analysed are age, gender, race and duration of VDT usage. Data collection included both subjective assessment (OSDI questionnaire) and objective assessment (TBUT and Schirmer's test). Statistical analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS Inc Version 24). Results were analysed using descriptive analysis and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Most of the medical student cohort was female and Malay. Most of the students use VDT for less than 8 hours. A high incidence of DES was noted among medical students (92.1%). None of the factors showed significant association with positive findings DES by subjective and objective assessment and duration of VDT usage. Conclusion: DES is common among VDT users. This study showed a high prevalence of DES among medical students in USM. The factors analysed did not show a significant association between DES and duration of VDT usage. This study may help to recognize the problem and will raise awareness of their daily practice and implement preventive measures to avoid VDT-related DES. ABSTRACT

The world invasion of dangerous virus diseases such as Covid 19, in the last few years, force people to wear masks as precaution. Although this prudence reduces the risk of infection and viruses' spread, it adds difficulty to distinguishing or identifying a person. This paper proposes a method to analyze images of masked persons for classifying their gender, in addition to identifying the colors of their skin and their eyes. We apply residual learning using the convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the visible part of the face. Cloud computing resources have been used as a convenient environment of substantial computing ability. Also, new database of RGB face images was created for testing. Experiments have been operated on the constructed database beside other datasets of facial images after cropping. ABSTRACT

Japan is rich in cultural properties of great historical and artistic value, of which the most important are protected as nationally designated cultural properties. Intangible cultural properties are techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation, such as theater, music, and craft techniques. In Japan, where the population is aging rapidly, digital archiving is essential for the transmission of intangible cultural assets. In this study, we focused on the musical accompaniment of the Kanuma Imamiya Shrine Festival (Kanuma Autumn Festival), which is designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Although the Kanuma Autumn Festival had to be canceled last year due to the emergency declaration requested by the spread of coronavirus infection, the festival is still being carried on. In this study, we have developed multi-viewpoint viewing system for ohayashi content with the cooperation of the Kamifukatsu Music Preservation Society and evaluated the system through experiments with participants. As a result, we obtained positive feedback from the participants, while those who had experience with musical performances pointed out points that needed to be improved. The controller was used as a method of interaction with the contents, but other methods have not yet been compared. Therefore, we aim to support the inheritance of tradition and examine the most user-friendly interaction method in terms of operability. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

Sleep staging has always been a hot topic in the field of sleep medicine, and it is the cornerstone of research on sleep problems. At present, sleep staging heavily relies on manual interpretation, which is a time-consuming and laborious task with subjective interpretation factors. In this paper, we propose an automatic sleep stage classification model based on the Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Network (BiRNN) with data bundling augmentation and label redirection for accurate sleep staging. Through extensive analysis, we discovered that the incorrect classification labels are primarily concentrated in the transition and nonrapid eye movement stage I (N1). Therefore, our model utilizes a sliding window input to enhance data bundling and an attention mechanism to improve feature enhancement after label redirection. This approach focuses on mining latent features during the N1 and transition periods, which can further improve the network model's classification performance. We evaluated on multiple public datasets and achieved an overall accuracy rate of 87.3%, with the highest accuracy rate reaching 93.5%. Additionally, the network model's macro F1 score reached 82.5%. Finally, we used the optimal network model to study the impact of different EEG channels on the accuracy of each sleep stage.

Background/aimsThe COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the use of personal protective equipment for those involved in trachoma survey grading and trichiasis surgery. We sought to determine which configuration of a face shield would be less likely to impact grading accuracy and ability to conduct trichiasis surgery. The research also included assessment of comfort, ease of cleaning and robustness.MethodsThere were three research phases. In phase 1, assessment of four potential face shield configurations was undertaken with principal trachoma graders and trichiasis surgeon trainers to decide which two options should undergo further testing. In phase 2, clarity of vision and comfort (in a classroom environment) of the two configurations were assessed compared with no face shield (control), while grading trachomatous inflammation—follicular (TF). The second phase also included the assessment of impact of the configurations while performing trichiasis surgery using a training model. In phase 3, face shield ease of use was evaluated during routine surgical programmes.ResultsIn phase 2, 124 trachoma graders and 28 trichiasis surgeons evaluated the 2 face shield configurations selected in phase 1. TF agreement was high (kappa=0.83 and 0.82) for both configurations compared with not wearing a face shield. Comfort was reported as good by 51% and 32% of graders using the two configurations. Trichiasis skill scores were similar for both configurations.ConclusionThe face shield configuration that includes a cut-out for mounting the 2.5× magnifying loupes does not appear to impact the ability or comfort of trachoma graders or trichiasis surgeons to carry out their work.

ABSTRACT

A 40-year-old male patient, an office worker, is a hospital staff. He applied with the complaint of sudden onset of blurred vision in the right eye. He stated that he had the first dose of inactivated covid vaccine (sinovac) 4 days ago in his story. In his examination, his vision was 0.5 in the right eye, 1.0 in the left eye, and his intraocular pressure was in both eyes. It was at the level of 15 mmHg. Biomicroscopically, the anterior segment looked natural. CSC was diagnosed in the FFA and OCT examinations.Treatment with oral acetazolamide (2x250 mg), topical nepafanac (4x1) was started. On the 13th day of the treatment, there was insufficient improvement in clinical findings, and oral acetazolamide was used. The dose was reduced (2x125 mg), oral epleronone (50 mg) was added. On the 70th day of the treatment, the vision in the right eye increased to full level in the control examination and it was observed that the retina returned to its normal appearance in the OCT examination.Copyright © 2023 Gazi Eye Foundation. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), also known as COVID-19, is much more difficult to transmit through the ocular surface than that through the mouth and nose. However, the available evidence has suggested the possibility of ocular surface transmission, especially in medical staff. In this paper, we describe the existing SARS-CoV-2 ocular surface symptoms, the possible mechanism of SARS-COV-2 entering ocular surface cells and SARS-COV-2 transmission through ocular surface. In addition, the existing and future possible research directions of SARS-CoV-2 transmission through ocular surface were analyzed, so as to provide new ideas and methods for clinical treatment of SARS-CoV-2 from the perspective of ocular surface.Copyright © 2021, Xinxiang Medical University. AIM: To explore the characteristics of astigmatism in preschool children before, during and after the COVID-19 epidemic, so as to provide a reference for further prevention and control of children's vision. *METHODS: In the consecutive four years from January 2018 to December 2021, a retrospective analysis of vision data was conducted on 2 273 preschool children (4546 eyes) younger than 4 years old who participated in children' s vision screening test in Baiyun district, Guangzhou. They were divided into 1 - year old group (ages<1-year old, 420 cases), 2-year old group (1-year <= ages < 2- year, 543 cases), 3- year old group (2- year <=ages <3-year, 614 cases), and 4 - year old group (3 - year <= ages< 4- year, 696 cases) according to ages. The analysis included astigmatic degrees of children's eyes as well as their conditions of astigmatism. *RESULTS: In 2018, the astigmatic degrees of the both eyes of 1-year-old group were higher than those of other groups (P<0.05). The binocular astigmatic degrees of the preschool children in four groups were obviously higher in 2020 than 2019 (P < 0. 05), while they were significantly decreased in 2021 when compared with 2020 (P < 0. 05). From 2019 to 2020, the increase of astigmatic degrees of the right eye is more considerable than the left eye of preschool children in those four groups (P < 0. 001). Furthermore, the morbidity of astigmatism basically echoes with the changing tendency of astigmatic degrees from 2018 to 2021. *CONCLUSIONS: Preschool children in Baiyun district, Guangzhou, have the highest degree of astigmatism and the fastest progression rate within 1 year old. Before COVID - 19 epidemic, the changes in astigmatism and prevalence were relatively stable;during COVID - 19 epidemic, the astigmatism and prevalence increased significantly and the astigmatic degrees of right eye increased more than that of the left eye;after the normalization of epidemic prevention and control, the astigmatism and prevalence decreased significantly.Copyright © 2023 International Journal of Ophthalmology (c/o Editorial Office). ABSTRACT

Introduction: Over 200,000 patients survive an intensive care admission each year in the United Kingdom (UK). For patients, survival is frequently beset by a range of chronic disabilities. Approximately 50% must navigate an often complex convalescence, while suffering serious and persistent symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and/or depression.1 Eye-movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma-focussed psychological therapy, recommended for treating PTSD by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies2 and NICE.3 However, EMDR has never been systematically investigated for patient benefit following intensive care admission. Objective(s): CovEMERALD4 evaluated the feasibility of delivering a randomised controlled trial (RCT), testing the effect of EMDR on the psychological health of intensive care survivors, following COVID-19 related critical illness. We also provide preliminary evidence of the effect on clinically relevant outcomes. Findings will inform the design of a subsequent fully-powered RCT. Method(s): This feasibility RCT was conducted at a single-centre, teaching hospital in the UK (University Hospital Southampton). Patients were eligible if they were admitted to intensive care for over 24-hours with confirmed COVID-19, were above 18 years of age, were recruited within 3-months of hospital discharge, and had no cognitive impairment or pre-existing psychotic diagnosis. Participants were randomised (1:1) to receive either up to 8 sessions of remotely-delivered EMDR (Recent traumatic events protocol) or standard care alone as the control group (CG). Psychometric evaluation was undertaken at Baseline and 6-months after hospital discharge. Result(s): Seventy-five consecutive patients were screened at hospital discharge, from October 2020 to April 2021. 51 eligible patients approached. 26 (51%) provided consent. Reasons for declining participation were;no psychological distress (n=16), no internet access (n=7) and being physically unready (n=2). Demographic variables were balanced between groups. Of the 13 patients randomised to EMDR, one withdrew prior to intervention: the remaining attended all sessions recommended by the psychological therapists (mean of 3-4 sessions per patient), giving an overall adherence of 93%. One patient from each group declined the 6-month follow-up evaluation, so trial completion was possible in 23 of 26 (88%) participants. No reasons for trial withdrawal were given. There were no attributable adverse events. Mean change in PTSD score (PTSD Checklist-Civilian) from Baseline to 6-months, was -8 (SD=10.49) in the EMDR group vs. +0.75 (SD=15.17) in CG (p=0.126). Mean change in anxiety (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety) was -0.45 (SD=2.3) following EMDR vs. -0.83 (SD=4.0) in the CG (p=0.787), and median change in depression (HADS-D) was -2(IQR:-3.0,1.0) following EMDR vs. +1(IQR-1.5,2.0) in the CG (p=0.263). Conclusion(s): EMDR can improve psychological recovery following an intensive care admission for COVID-19, and appeared feasible and safe. Although not powered to determine clinical effectiveness, this single-centre feasibility study returned a positive signal, in reducing PTSD and depressive symptoms. CovEMERALD has supported a successful NIHR doctoral fellowship application, during which protocol refinements will be tested, within existing, and recommended rehabilitation pathways. Trial activity and progression will be consistent with the Medical Research Council framework for developing and evaluating complex healthcare interventions.5.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine the effect of COVID-19 on eye sight due to increase screen time in undergraduate students of medical school. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Place and duration of study: This survey was carried out from October 2022 to December 2022 in Army Medical College Rawalpindi. Questionnaires were filled in person and also online-based platform was used to distribute the e-questionnaire, developed using the Google Form. The participants were asked to share the e-questionnaire with their friends using Facebook and Messenger. Method(s): Participants were selected for the study using non-probability consecutive sampling. College students of 20-25 years were included in the study. Sample size was 400 according to a study done internationally. Participants with comorbidities (cataract, glaucoma) were excluded from study. Participants having (trouble concentrating on things such as reading the newspaper, books or watching television) were included in the study. Digital eye strain was calculated using validated computer vision syndrome (CVS-Q) questionnaire to measure the symptoms such as eye fatigue, headache, blurred vision, double vision, itching eyes, dryness, tears, eye redness and pain, excessive blinking, feeling of a foreign body, burning or irritation, difficulty in focusing for near vision, feeling of sight worsening, and sensitivity to light. Qualitative data was analyzed using Chi square test. Results A total number of 470 responses were recorded, out of which 257 (54.7%) were males and 213(45.3%) were females. In our study, the most common symptom was headache, affecting 58.1% of the population before COVID 19 which has increased to 83.2% and the P value is less than 0.001.Theother symptoms which also showed P value less than 0.001 were blurred vision while using digital device, irritated or burning eyes, dry eyes and sensitivity to bright light. Conclusion The practical implication of the study is to create awareness among general population about COVID, that eye sight is Bull`s Target to be affected by it and simple preventing measures can be taken. The purpose of this study is to limelight the importance that during COVID 19 lockdown the excessive use of digital devices and their cons on the ocular health among future health care workers.Copyright © 2023 Lahore Medical And Dental College. ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a revolution in the education sector. The continuous use of gadgets for learning and entertainment has aroused a keen interest in eye health and the role of foods and nutrients in improving eye health. This study aims to identify and summarize various eye disorders and parameters that are involved in ocular health. Methods: A detailed search of related literature has been carried out with the help of authenticated search engines like Pubmed and Google scholar to review the major deleterious eye problems that persist, and the aetiology of the disorders. Though ocular health is determined by several parameters like socio economic factors, genetic determinants, gender, race, life style and nutrition, diet seems to be a significant lifestyle element that pose to have longstanding effects on ocular health. This study concludes that, it is not an individual nutrient or non-nutrient that impacts eye health, rather a holistic nutritional approach renders more efficacy on vision. It is emphasized that a proper advocacy of foods and nutrients, wise means of technology usage can help to overcome the deleterious effects of deficiencies on eyes.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated a rapid shift of learning and education from traditional means to digital platforms. This paper aims to examine the impact of online learning on digital engagement and digital-related health symptoms among university students one year into the coronavirus pandemic. Methods: Data was collected through a self-administered online questionnaire after ethical approval. The questionnaire was adapted from the previously published Lifestyle Study in Youth Questionnaire. Through the questionnaire, the perception of students toward online learning was probed and recorded. Digital engagement and digital-related health symptoms were compared before and during the COVID-19 lockdown. Results: The majority (97.5%) of respondents preferred face-to-face learning. The time spent on digital devices was 1.8 times higher during COVID-19 than before the COVID-19 lockdown (t-test = -18.86, p<0.0001). The total hours of sleep were reduced during COVID-19 lockdown (0.6 hours lesser) (t-test = -3.92, p<0.0001). The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test revealed significant changes in digital-related health symptoms (15 out of 17) due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Digital eye strain, dry eye syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, and upper quadrant postural and muscle strain emerged (p<0.05). Conclusion: Most university students favoured face-to-face learning compared to online learning. There was a two-fold rise in digital engagement during the COVID-19 lockdown. As a result, it has seemed to translate into reduced sleeping hours. The short-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic on digital-related health symptoms amongst university students was apparent. The long-term effects require further investigations to facilitate fact-based decision-making. ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the dry eye in patients with Corona virus 19 disease (COVID-19). Materials and methods: In this prospective study 54 eyes of 27 patients who had COVID-19 within last 6 months and 60 eyes of 30 age and sex matched healthy controls were included. After the eye examination the tear film break-up time (BUT) and Schirmer 1 test (without anesthesia) was performed in all subjects. Results: The mean age was 30.1±7.7 in study group and 29.6±6.2 in controls. The mean time after recovery of COVID-19 was 11,6±7,2 weeks (min 2-max 24). The mean BUT value was 11.46±3.96 seconds in the study grup and 11.70±3.52 seconds in controls and the difference between two groups was not statically significant (p>0.05). The mean Schirmer 1 test value was 18.75±7.82 mm in the study group and 17.31±6.23 mm in controls and the difference between two groups was not statically significant (p>0.05). There was no ocular findings other than epiphora and hyperaemia (11%) and periocular pain (7%) in COVID-19 group. Conclusions: There was no difference in dry eye tests between COVID-19 patients and healthy subjects. COVID-19 may not cause dry eye in patients. © 2022, Pamukkale University. All rights reserved.
